One of the main ways technology has improved reporting of illicit activities and corporate malpractice is through increasing whistle-blowers’ anonymity. A notable mean of offering such anonymity was through incorporating new technologies at the time like hotline services. This has evolved since then as technology evolved and the use of web portals became an attractive mean of illicit practices-reporting since it allowed for anonymous submission of illicit practices through portals like GlobaLeaks which used technology known as Tor.
In our research, we aim to see how we can use new technologies to improve the anonymous reporting of illicit activities particularly in the financial sector. We will highlight how new technologies are currently used to ensure whistle-blowers’ protection and, at the same time, make recommendations on how technology can be used to enhance the current protection offered to whistle-blowers.
